Who Fixes Lutron, Control4, and Savant Systems?
Premium home automation systems from Lutron, Control4, and Savant require specialized professionals to install, program, and service them. A general electrician can wire the infrastructure, but the programming layer — lighting scenes, shade control, whole-home audio, touchscreen interfaces — requires certified dealers and integrators. Here's who you need and how to find them.
Lutron: Two Tiers of Complexity
Lutron makes products across a wide complexity range. Lutron Caseta and Diva Smart dimmers are DIY-friendly and can be swapped by a licensed electrician with no special certification. However, Lutron HomeWorks QS, Ketra, and RadioRA 3 — the systems found in high-end homes — require a Lutron-authorized dealer and programmer. These systems control lighting zones, daylight sensors, and motorized shades with a level of nuance that requires factory training to set up correctly. If your Lutron system is malfunctioning, check whether it's a budget Caseta product or a full HomeWorks system before calling anyone.
Control4: Certified Dealer Network
Control4 operates exclusively through its authorized dealer and installer network. You cannot buy Control4 hardware at retail — it's only available through certified dealers. If your Control4 system needs programming updates, driver installations, or hardware replacement, you must work with a Control4 Certified Showroom or Control4 Certified Custom Integrator. These dealers have passed Control4's technical training program and can access the Composer programming software needed to modify your system.
Savant: Apple-Centric Luxury Systems
Savant systems are among the most premium home automation platforms available, often installed in homes with six-figure AV budgets. Like Control4, Savant is dealer-only. Savant Certified Integrators hold category-specific certifications (AV, lighting, climate, networking) and are the only authorized service providers. If your Savant system needs attention, contact your original installing dealer first — they'll have your system's configuration on file. If the original dealer is no longer in business, any Savant Certified Integrator can import and modify the configuration.
What the Electrician's Role Is
In all three ecosystems, a licensed electrician's role is limited to the physical infrastructure: running low-voltage wiring, installing keypads and touchscreen enclosures, pulling any necessary permits for line-voltage work (dimmer circuits, motorized shade power, rack room circuits). The programming is always the domain of the certified integrator. For service calls on a working system, you rarely need an electrician at all — you need the integrator.
